7 Prompts for Using ChatGPT To Write LitRPG

a mix of fantasy characters in a fantasy pub, telling stories

The Genre

LitRPG is a relatively new genre in fiction-land but one I’m seriously in love with. Take almost any other genre–especially high fantasy, cyberpunk, and harem romance–and mix it with gaming mechanics like stats and leveling up and you’ve got yourself LitRPG. If you want some examples of some LitRPG books, check out this Goodreads “Best LitRPG Books” list.

I couldn’t think of a more perfect genre to use ChatGPT for. In fact, I recently tried it for my own litRPG story with great success! I want to share some of the prompts I used that really worked for me. Hopefully it’ll help inspire you and give you more ideas about how to apply ChatGPT to writing LitRPG (or any fantasy/sci-fi genre).

Below are seven prompts with examples to get you started. I was so impressed with the results I got doing this that I wanted to share them, so each example will be an entire exchange between ChatGPT and myself. I hope they demonstrate the amazing possibilities available for LitRPG writers.

So grab whatever grog quenches your thirst and get ready to do some writing!

6. Prompt

Can you create a piece of dialog where a disembodied voice tells [CHARACTER] about [GAME MECHANICS].

Example

ME: Can you create a piece of dialog where the voice tells Hadley the rules of the game? As if, suddenly, a voice breaks through her thoughts, welcoming her to Diesel Dynasty.

ChatGPT: “Welcome to Diesel Dynasty, adventurer!” the voice booms through the room, echoing off the walls. “We are thrilled to have you join us on this exciting journey through time and space.”

Hadley blinks, momentarily taken aback by the voice’s volume, but quickly regains her composure. “Uh, thank you,” she says, unsure if anyone can hear her.

“Before we begin, we must first go over the rules of the game,” the voice continues. “First and foremost, there is no respawning. If your character dies, you will be permanently logged out of the game.”

Hadley gulps, the gravity of the situation sinking in. She had heard rumors of games like this, where death was final, but had never played one herself.

“But don’t worry,” the voice adds, seeming to read her thoughts. “We have designed the game to be challenging but fair. You will have plenty of opportunities to level up your character and acquire new gear.”

“Speaking of gear,” the voice says, “it’s time for you to choose your outfit. As an adventurer, you have several options to choose from.”

7. Prompt

Acting as if you are a fantasy writer, can you expand the following with detail and description: [BRIEF SCENE BITS]

Example

ME: Acting as if you are a fantasy writer, can you expand the following with detail and description: Hadley wakes up in the game, in a plain equipment room, and looks around. It’s an octagon with glowing display cases that hold outfits.

ChatGPT: Hadley blinks her eyes open, and for a moment, she’s disoriented. She’s not in her cramped little apartment anymore. Instead, she’s in a room that looks like something out of a science fiction movie. The walls are metallic and gleaming, and the only door is sealed shut. Hadley sits up and takes a deep breath, trying to calm the sudden wave of panic that threatens to engulf her.

As she looks around, she notices that the room is octagonal, with eight glowing display cases set into the walls. Each case holds an outfit, and as Hadley approaches, she sees that they’re all carefully arranged to showcase their unique features. There’s one for a sky captain, with a long coat and goggles, another for a fighter, with leather armor and a sword. She spots an outfit for a scientist, with a white lab coat and a pair of thick-rimmed glasses.

Hadley can’t help but marvel at the intricate details of each outfit. They all seem to fit the diesel punk aesthetic, with gears and cogs worked into the fabric, and shiny metallic accents. She realizes that this game is going to be more immersive than anything she’s ever experienced before.
